Resorts vs Condos vs Home Rentals

Vacationing on Maui means you need a place to stay!  There are many, many resorts and condos to choose from as well as private home rentals through VRBO or AirBNB.  Which is the best you ask?  The following are some questions to ask yourself when looking to book accommodation on Maui:
Do you want an ocean view
Do you want daily maid service
Do you want a kitchen
Do you need more than one bedroom for family or friends
Are you renting a car and don't want to pay valet fees to park

Staying at a resort or luxury hotel

There are many beautiful hotel resorts on Maui.  With stunning landscaping, fountains, swimming pools, and usually right near the beach, many rooms are ocean view with some being garden view.
Things to consider when booking a hotel room:
• Many hotels and resorts offer great services such as:
  •      Help with luggage
  •      On-site restaurants and bars
  •      Fitness center
  •      Laundry service (can be spendy)
  •      Concierge service
  •      Usually more than one swimming pool, cabanas, beach service with chairs and umbrella
• If you rent a car (which is highly recommended!), parking / valet service can be $20 - $40 a day
• Most resorts charge a daily resort fee ranging from $20-$30 per night
• Resorts and hotels are great if your stay is short so you don't need to buy groceries
• Resorts and hotels are also great if you want or need maid service each day

Staying in a condo

Kihei, Kaanapali and Napili have many condo units to choose from and staying in a condo has several benefits.  Condo units can come as a studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, and even some 3 bedrooms.  This is great if you are travelling as a group or with children and need more than one bedroom.  All condos also have full kitchens so you can cook meals and save money on eating out for 3 meals a day.  Most condo units have bbq's you can use as well.  Things you might consider when looking for a condo unit:
• Ocean view or near the beach
• Condos typically have more space with a living area, dining table, full kitchen, and a lanai
• Some condos have 2 bathrooms
• Swimming pool
• Washer or dryer in the unit or laundry room on site
• Condos always include free parking
• Many condos include beach gear such as umbrella, beach chairs, boogie boards, and snorkel gear

Renting a home via VRBO or AirBNB

Renting a home can be a great idea if you are going on your trip with a large family and need more than 3 bedrooms.  Most home rentals however are not on the beach.  Please be very careful when booking a home using AirBNB or VRBO, and never rent one through Craigslist (no matter how good the photographs look or what a great deal it seems - these are usually too good to be true).  Definitely ask the person renting out their home for their Short Term Rental License number and verify it with Maui county.
All that being said, renting a spectacular beachfront home on Maui can a be a once in a lifetime experience!
